Aircraft are used to transport passengers between the main communities of eastern Arnhem Land. These flights transport medical personnel to outlying communities and patients in to hospital. They also take education, government, essential services, pastors and other personnel to and from the isolated communities as well as enabling travel for the people of those communities. Gove is also the main MAF base in North Australia for administration and engineering.

Having gained its independence in May 2002, East Timor still remains a nation with many needs. Isolated communities in outer regions have very limited access to many of life's essentials. Surface transport can be slow and dangerous with narrow, winding roads that often become impassable. For many of the almost 1 million people in this small, new nation, life can be very difficult.

Most of MAF's major daily work is to provide an air service to communities in PNG's remotest areas. Through the flights, the people in the remote areas obtain health, education and other essential services which otherwise would not be available to them. MAF is often the only aircraft operator willing and able to provide a service to these remote areas.

MAF's engineering and training facilities at Mareeba (Queensland) are a hive of activity. Over a dozen full time employees, together with their families, provide essential support for the Branches of Australian MAF in engineering, training and in a variety of other ways.

MAF have been providing essential air transport as part of Tsunami relief efforts along the west coast of Aceh and now has a pilot family and plane based in Aceh to assist on a longer term basis.
